The 2nd European Society of Applied Biocatalysis (ESAB) digital congress was taking place online from 25-27 November 2024, featuring an exceptional program of cutting-edge science, world-class plenary talks and interactive sessions that made it a must-attend for anyone working in biocatalysis, enzyme engineering and related fields. The congress was organized into 52 lectures, 10 of which were plenary lectures, and each day was concluded with an interactive poster session (16 postersin total), offering direct engagement and discussion opportunities. The congress was followed by 60 registered participants every day.

The lectures covered numerous contemporary topics:

  • Systems metabolic engineering and its applications
  • Beyond nature: Embracing nature’s catalysts
  • Biocatalysis in multiphase reactors
  • Our digital methods in enzyme engineering: from screening to soluble expression of the beneficial genes
  • Lab–based scale-down approaches to understand enzyme stability under industrial conditions
  • Exploring and exploiting nature's toolkit for complex natural product (bio-)synthesis
  • Biocatalytic applications of plant enzymes in alkaloid synthesis
  • From femtoliter enzymatic reactor to ton/year chemical plant by micro- and nanofluidics
  • Discovery & engineering of biocatalysts for organic synthesis
  • Development and applications of activity-based probes in glycol-science

The EcoPlastiC project results were presented in a poster “Greener extraction of intracellular poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) from Zobellella denitrificans biomass using enzyme cocktails and deep eutectic solvents” authored by Sanja Skaro Bogojevic (IMGGE), Jelena Simic (IMGGE), Sanja Jeremic (IMGGE), Jasmina Nikodinovic-Runic (IMGGE), Maciej Guzik (IKiFP PAN) and Marijana Ponjavic (IMGGE).
