The Winter School on Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) and Disinfection By-Products (DBPs): Occurrence, Impact and Elimination was organized by four European projects: BlueWWater, H2OforAll, MAR2PROTECT and ALERT-PFAS. It was held in the World of Wine (WOW) in Porto (Portugal) from 25-26 November 2024.

The objective of this event was to share the latest advances in the occurrence, impact and elimination of contaminants and to present new solutions for providing alternative water sources for crop production and safe drinking water. The full Book of Abstracts is available HERE.

The Winter School included:

  • Section devoted to PhD students where they had the opportunity to present poster communications and meet experts;
  • Workshop on Publishing Perspectives;
  • Workshop on European Directives on Drinking Water, Water Reuse and Urban Wastewater Treatment;
  • Presentations on Complementary Skills such as high throughput methodologies for the determination of DBPs, CECs, PFASs, microplastics, ARB and ARGs, environmental and health impacts and prevention measures and, technologies for control of DBPs, CECs, PFASs, microplastics, ARB and ARGs;
  • Workshop on Wastewater Treatment and Reuse;
  • Co-creation workshop on Future Challenges in Drinking Water Sector - public engagement, communication and raising awareness;
  • Exhibition of water treatment related products and services, and network opportunities.

Within the Technology for Control of DBPs, CECs, PFAS, Microplastics, ARB and ARGs session, Prof. Maria A. M. Reis (NOVA) was an invited lecturer and she presented the aims and some results from the EcoPlastiC project in a talk “Biological Removal and Recovery of Micro/plastics”, authored by Maria A. M. Reis, Filomena Freitas, Cristiana A. V. Torres, Patricia Concordio dos Reis, Monica Carvalheira, Asiyah Esmail and Ana Teresa Rebocho.
